Released on 24 April 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Core Black/Cloud White/Gum. The Samba Millennium is the indoor court version of the shoe, built for the hard flat surfaces of futsal and five a side rather than for a grass pitch, and it carries the sport function that the fashion world has mostly forgotten the Samba ever had. adidas has been making single purpose shoes since Adi Dassler started building for individual events in Herzogenaurach, and indoor football is a genuinely specific brief: grip without marking, a low centre of gravity, and enough feel through the sole to control a ball with the outside of your foot. Black with white and a gum sole is the model's default, the version that has been sold continuously to people who play rather than to people who collect.
Utility
Two builds. Sport correct: on court with proper football socks and shorts, where the flat gum sole and low profile do what they were made for. Off pitch: straight leg dark jeans with a slight break, a plain crew and white socks just showing, letting the black and white contrast carry a simple fit. Best for indoor pitches, casual daily wear and travel, and poor for wet or muddy ground where a flat gum sole has almost no bite. Sambas run long and narrow, so half a size down suits most feet. Clean gum soles early with a damp cloth or a rubber eraser before dirt sets, keep the white stripes from yellowing by avoiding harsh bleaching cleaners, and air dry rather than putting them near a radiator.
Influence
The Samba's crossover into everyday dress is one of the largest sportswear stories of recent years, but the important detail is that it started on the pitch and moved outward, exactly like the Superstar moving from the NBA to hip hop, or the terrace shoes that made Originals a lifestyle business. adidas did not manufacture the Samba's cultural moment, it simply kept making the shoe for decades while the demand caught up. The Millennium is the version that stayed honest to the sport through all of it, which is why it reads differently to the fashion oriented OG: less styled, more used, and worn by people who genuinely play.
Construction
The Millennium is a playing shoe, so the sole is the important part. Gum rubber is used indoors because it grips varnished and concrete surfaces without leaving marks, and it holds that grip when the floor is dusty. Above it, a low, close cut upper with the Three Stripes stitched along the flank in the brand's structural tradition, and a reinforced toe area at the point of ball contact. Black with white stripes is the highest contrast combination adidas runs on this shape, which is why it is the version people picture. Expect a firm, thin underfoot feel with no cushioning story: this is a shoe designed to let you feel the floor, not to protect you from it.
