Released on 4 July 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Cloud White/Collegiate Navy/Gum. This is the junior cut of the Samba OG, the grade school version of a shoe that adults spent two years fighting over. White Collegiate Navy Gum is the safest and most classic way to run it: a white leather upper, deep navy Three Stripes, and a gum sole underneath. Navy on white is the school shoe palette, which makes the J version feel less like a scaled down adult sneaker and more like the shoe finding its natural audience. adidas has kept the Samba in continuous production long enough that a child wearing this is getting the same silhouette their parents wore, unaltered except in size.
Navy and white is the most versatile combination in a child's wardrobe. Recipe one: school appropriate, with navy or grey trousers and a white shirt, where the shoe matches a uniform without looking like a uniform shoe. Recipe two: weekend, with denim shorts or joggers and a plain tee, the gum sole warming the whole thing up. Fits are worth checking carefully on juniors: the Samba runs narrow and slightly long, so measure rather than guess and leave a thumb of growing room, no more. Clean the white leather with a damp cloth before marks set, brush the suede toe dry, and use a gum eraser on the sole rather than soaking it.
The Samba spread through European football terrace and casual dressing without a campaign behind it, and adidas has always been most powerful when it is adopted rather than pushed. The definitive proof is Run-DMC, who released My Adidas on 29 May 1986 with no commercial arrangement, then held their shell toes up at Madison Square Garden in July in front of adidas executive Angelo Anastasio, producing the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. The junior Samba is that inheritance arriving early: the shoe is a shared reference before the wearer knows there is anything to reference.
The junior build keeps the adult architecture: white leather quarter, shaped suede toe overlay, serrated Three Stripes stitched down the flank, and a thin flat gum outsole. What matters on a kids shoe is different, though. The flat sole and low stack mean strong ground feel, which is good for balance and bad for impact, so this suits school and everyday wear more than sport. Gum rubber grips well on smooth indoor floors, which is where children spend most of their day. White leather is the panel that takes the beating, and on a child's shoe the toe box will crease and scuff within weeks, so accept it or buy dark.
