Designed by Peter Moore and released on 12 September 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Cacao Wow/Cacao Wow/Twine/Sail/Geode Teal/Luminous Green. Cacao Wow is a name from the cosmetics counter rather than the locker room, and that is a fair signal of where the Air Jordan 1 Low sits now. The shape is unchanged from what Peter Moore laid out with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike had signed in October 1984, right down to the wing shaped eyestay and the perforated toe box, but the colour comes from a completely different vocabulary: a soft chocolate brown warmed against a pale base. The Low cut is what makes the palette work, since a full collar in brown would read as a boot. This is the model behaving like a wardrobe staple, which is a role it earned by outlasting the sport it was designed for.
Brown makes tan and cream easy. Try stone chinos, an ecru knit and a brown leather belt, letting the shoe repeat the belt and close the outfit. The other route is denim: mid wash straight jeans with a white tee and a brown suede jacket, where the shoe grounds the whole thing. Avoid pure black clothing, which turns the brown muddy. Fit is true to length with a snug midfoot that eases in. Keep it dry, since pale base panels stain quickly and brown leather bloats if it soaks. Brush after each wear and use shoe trees or paper if you are storing it for a season.
Neutral and cosmetic named colourways are a direct result of Jordan Brand becoming a standalone Nike division in 1997, with its own apparel, roster and collaboration programme rather than a single yearly basketball release. That structure let the line design for people who came to it through fashion. The collaboration list makes the same point: Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS on the design side, with Travis Scott, Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj on the music side. A brown Low is the everyday product of that widening, not a departure from it.
Brown leather on the Swoosh, collar and heel against a light neutral body gives you clear panel separation without any hard contrast, so the shoe looks softer than its two tone construction actually is. Leather panels follow the original 1985 cut lines, the toe box is perforated, and a foam midsole sits over a rubber outsole. Brown is the most forgiving colour on this silhouette for daily wear because dust reads as tone rather than dirt, but the pale base panels will need attention at the midsole join. Condition the brown with a colourless product so you do not deepen it unevenly, and let the crease develop rather than fighting it.
