Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in University Blue/Sailwhite/Psychic Blue/Wolf Grey. University Blue is North Carolina, and North Carolina is where Michael Jordan played before Nike signed him on 26 October 1984. Jordan Brand still outfits the programme, alongside Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan. That makes this pale blue the one colour in the catalogue that predates Chicago entirely, the shade attached to the player before the contract, the Jumpman or the division. Putting it on a Low SE built around skating is a modern reading of the same shoe: the Air Jordan 1 has been adopted by skaters for decades because a durable leather high or low with a flat sole happens to be excellent equipment for it, entirely without the brand's permission.
Pale blue is easier to wear than people expect because it functions as a neutral against denim. Loose fit jeans with a white tee and a navy crew is the straightforward version, the blue reading as a lighter echo of the denim. The second recipe goes full skate: baggy grey carpenter trousers, a printed tee, a flannel over the top. This is a shoe you should be comfortable wrecking, so buy it to wear rather than to preserve. Clean the toe area regularly, since scuffed pale leather holds dirt in the abrasion. Replace laces early rather than late, because a frayed lace on a skate pair fails at the worst moment.
The Air Jordan 1's second life came from outside basketball. Hip hop claimed it early, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z all naming Jordans, and skateboarding claimed it independently, on purely practical grounds. Both adoptions happened without a campaign. The brand's own advertising history, from Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon spots to the Banned campaign built around the league's 51 percent white shoe rule and Nike's decision to pay the fine, established the shoe as the property of people who did not follow rules. University Blue ties the whole thing back to North Carolina, the programme Jordan Brand still equips.
Skate oriented builds of this silhouette are about survival rather than novelty, and the areas to watch are the ones that fail first: the lace area over the toe, the ollie patch above the outstep, and the panel stitching. A Low cut gives you board feel and ankle freedom at the cost of any support, which is the trade skaters generally accept. The Air Jordan 1 last is the same one people already know their sizing in. Nike Air cushioning has been part of this line since the Air Jordan II. University Blue is a pale tone, so it will scuff visibly and quickly, and on a skate pair that is a feature rather than a fault.
