    Origin

    chevron
The Banned name comes from advertising, not from a league ruling, and it is worth getting the story straight because it is the most misquoted moment in sneaker history. The NBA's uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white. The shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Michael Jordan wore before the Air Jordan I reached the public on 1 April 1985. Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and built a campaign around the confrontation rather than redesigning anything. Black and red is the colour arrangement that carries that campaign, and on a Mid it becomes wearable at a scale the collector's High never quite reaches. You are buying the marketing decision that taught the entire sneaker market that transgression sells.

    Utility

    chevron
Recipe one: black jeans, a white tee, a red or black bomber, and let the shoe finish a fit that is already speaking its language. Recipe two: grey wool trousers cropped at the ankle, a black roll neck, and a black overcoat, using the red as the single point of heat in an otherwise cold outfit. Do not add a second red item; the shoe already owns it. The Mid collar wants a hem that stops just above it. Fit is true with a narrow toe box. This is a genuinely all weather colourway, and one of the few AJ1s that looks better slightly worn than pristine.

    Influence

    chevron
The Banned campaign is the origin point for sneaker marketing as provocation, and everything that followed borrowed from it. Air Jordan reached culture through the collision of basketball and hip hop: Spike Lee directed the earliest advertising and played Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put the shoes in their lyrics. The line also has a documented darker chapter, with the shoes associated with robberies and assaults in the late 1980s and some American schools banning them from campus. Black and red is the colourway all of that history attached itself to, for better and worse.

    Construction

    chevron
A leather upper over a rubber cupsole, a padded mid height collar and the Wings mark that dates the earliest era of the line. The Mid is the most practical cut in the family: enough collar to give the shoe its shape, not so much that it dictates your trouser hem. Black and red is also the easiest AJ1 combination to keep. Black leather absorbs scuffing, red hides the grey haze pavement leaves on lighter panels, and neither needs the constant attention a white pair demands. The white midsole is the only exposed surface, so keep foam and a soft eraser for the sidewall. Condition the black occasionally so the toe crease stays supple, and always air dry.
