Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Cement Grey/Fire Red/White. Bred is shorthand for black and red, the pairing that made the 1 notorious before anyone cared about sneakers as objects. Shadow is the grey and black variant that sits beside it in the model's vocabulary. Putting both names on one Mid is a deliberate mash of two of the oldest colour codes the silhouette owns, on the cut that took the shape off the court and into daily use. The line began when Nike signed a Chicago Bulls rookie on 26 October 1984 with royalties attached, expecting 3 million dollars of sales over three years and getting a shoe that sold out its first 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million. Bred Shadow is that legacy in its most wearable register.
This is a hard palette, so keep the fit hard. First recipe: black jeans, grey heavyweight hoodie, black cap, red visible only at the shoe. Second: olive or charcoal cargo trousers cuffed at the ankle with a plain black tee, the Mid collar giving a cleaner ankle line than a High under a tapered leg. Occasion is everyday, gigs, evenings, and it survives bad weather better than any pale colourway. Lace snug through the top eyelets for support if you are walking distances. Clean the grey panels with a soft brush and mild soap, avoid soaking the leather, dry away from direct heat and use a shoe tree or paper to hold the toe shape between wears.
Black and red is the palette at the centre of the Banned advertising, which was built on the league's uniform rule requiring shoes at least 51 percent white and a 5,000 dollar per game fine Nike chose to pay. That campaign taught the sneaker market that transgression sells, and it is why this colour pairing still reads as the aggressive option. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put the shoe into music, and the resale market the model anchors is valued around 2 billion dollars. Bred is the colourway that carries all of that without needing a single word of explanation.
Panelled leather, Mid collar. The blocking here does the heavy lifting: black overlays against grey and red create three distinct depths, so the stitched panel edges read as lines in a drawing rather than as joins. A Mid collar sits below the ankle bone, giving structure without the fold and slouch of the High, which makes it the easier cut to wear with trousers that break at the shoe. Rubber outsole with the pivot circle at the forefoot. Dark leather hides city dirt well, so the visible ageing will be creasing across the toe box and softening at the collar rather than staining. The red accents will be the first thing to look tired if the pair is stored damp.
