Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 April 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Industrial Blue. Industrial Blue is a working blue, closer to a boiler suit or a factory floor than to a team kit, and putting it on an Air Jordan 1 Mid takes the shoe somewhere the Chicago palette cannot go. The silhouette is the one Peter Moore designed with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Michael Jordan, produced for him on 17 November 1984 and released to the public on 1 April 1985 after Nike had signed him the previous October with a royalty attached to sales. The Mid is where Jordan Brand tests colour ideas at volume, because it is built to be worn rather than stored. A deep utilitarian blue is one of the easier ones to live with.
Two fits. Workwear leaning: ecru or stone carpenter trousers, a white tee, and a navy chore jacket, so the blue reads as part of a utility palette rather than a sports one. Or sharp and simple: black tapered trousers, a grey knit, and a black jacket, letting the blue be the only colour present. The Mid collar likes a cuffed or cropped hem so the ankle is visible. Sizing is standard AJ1, close to true to size with a snug midfoot. Clean the midsole with a soft brush and mild soap, since white rubber against a dark upper is the highest contrast surface on the shoe and the first thing that looks tired.
The Air Jordan 1 spent its first decade tied to one team and one player, and the second one escaping both. Jordan Brand was set up as a standalone Nike division in 1997 with its own athlete roster, apparel and collaborations, and by 2022 it was worth about 5.1 billion dollars to Nike, with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing to Jordan himself under the royalty deal struck in 1984. Non team colourways are the everyday face of that independence. You are not signalling Chicago when you wear industrial blue, you are signalling the silhouette, which is the thing hip hop, film and the resale market all locked onto in the first place.
Leather across the upper in the standard AJ1 panel set: perforated toe box, mudguard, eyestay, heel counter, and a padded ankle collar carrying the Wings logo, all sitting on a rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle. A saturated mid blue hides scuffing better than any pale colourway and reads cleanly against a white midsole, which means the midsole is the part that decides whether the pair looks fresh. The Mid collar creases across the flex point like every AJ1 does, and on blue leather those creases stay low contrast. Wipe with a damp cloth, keep harsh cleaners off the dyed panels, and dry away from heat.
