Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 12 December 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Pink Wash/Violet Frost/White. The Air Jordan 1 exists because Nike was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face of its own. It signed Chicago Bulls rookie Michael Jordan on 26 October 1984 to a six year deal worth 2.5 million dollars, roughly three times any other contract in the league at the time, with a royalty on sales attached. Peter Moore designed the shoe with Bruce Kilgore, the first pair was produced for Jordan on 17 November 1984, the public got it on 1 April 1985, and the initial 50,000 pairs sold out. The Mid keeps that outline with a collar sitting between the High and the Low. Pink Wash reads the silhouette in a soft, faded pink against white, pulling the shoe away from Chicago red into something quieter you can wear every day.
Two ways in. First, keep it tonal: cream or off white wide leg trousers, a washed grey tee, and a light knit tied at the waist so the pink stays the only saturated thing in the fit. Second, push contrast: black straight leg jeans cuffed just above the collar, a charcoal hoodie, and a black cap, so the shoe carries the whole outfit. The Mid runs close to true to size for most feet, with a snug midfoot if you have a high instep, so try a half size up if you plan to wear thick socks. Brush the leather dry after every few wears, spot clean the mudguard with a soft brush and mild soap, and keep them off wet ground because pale leather stains from the edges in.
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that turned sneakers into a collecting culture rather than a footwear category, and the resale market it anchors has been valued at roughly two billion dollars. Its shape has since become a canvas the whole fashion system borrows: Jordan Brand's collaboration programme has run the silhouette through Off-White with Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, alongside Travis Scott's Cactus Jack work on the 1, 4 and 6. A wash-toned pink pair belongs to that second life, where the AJ1 is styled rather than played in. Buying one is buying into a shape that survived the move from the hardwood to the street without needing to be redrawn.
You get the original architecture rather than a reinterpretation of it: a leather upper cut into the familiar toe, mudguard, eyestay and heel panels, perforations across the toe box for airflow, a padded ankle collar carrying the Wings logo, and a rubber cupsole with the concentric pivot circle under the forefoot. Pink Wash relies on tonal blocking, so the Swoosh and overlays read through shade and stitching rather than contrast. Expect the leather to crease across the flex point early, which is normal on this pattern. The pale pink shows scuffing and transfer from dark denim faster than a black or red pair, so treat the mudguard as the surface that needs the most attention.
