Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 December 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Medium Grey/Cool Grey. Patent leather entered this line on the Air Jordan 11, where it brought a formal wear material onto a basketball court and is the reason that model gets worn with suits. Everything since has been a negotiation with that precedent. Putting patent on a Mid, in cool grey, is the most casual possible version of the idea: the gloss is there, the dress code implication is not. Cool grey reads blue in daylight and flat under artificial light, so the finish does most of the work of keeping the shoe interesting. It is a special edition that borrows a signature from a later model and applies it to the silhouette that started the line.
Recipe one: mid grey tailored trousers with a black roll neck and a grey overcoat, where the gloss stands in for a polished dress shoe without the formality. Recipe two: black denim with a white tee and a grey bomber, letting the shoe be the only reflective surface in the fit. This is an evening and cold weather shoe, since patent dulls and crazes under sustained heat and direct sun. Fit runs true for most, half up for wide feet. Wipe with a soft damp cloth and dry immediately, keep alcohol and solvents away from the coating entirely, and store cool and dry, since ageing midsole materials break down over time whatever condition the upper is in.
The 11's patent decision is one of the clearest examples of how this line changed dress codes rather than just sportswear. From the 3 onward, under Tinker Hatfield, each model added a signature that outlived it: elephant print on the 3, patent on the 11, carbon fibre shank plates and Kevlar reinforcement later. Those signatures now circulate freely across the catalogue, which is how a Mid ends up in patent decades after the fact. It is a design system quoting itself, and it works because buyers recognise the material before they recognise the model number.
Patent is a coated surface rather than a finished hide, so it behaves unlike the tumbled leather most Air Jordan 1s use. It repels water and light dirt, wipes clean with a damp cloth, and creases in defined lines that are permanent once they form. On a Mid that matters less than on a high, because the flex point sees less strain from a lower collar. The panel layout is the standard one, separate toe, eyestay, quarter and heel pieces stitched over a foam midsole, with a rubber outsole beneath and the pivot circle at the forefoot. The mid collar carries ankle padding and needs no break in at all.
