Designed by Peter Moore and released on 25 October 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Taxi/White/Sail. The Wear Away idea puts the design in the wearer's hands: an outer surface finished to abrade with use, revealing a contrasting layer underneath, so the shoe only becomes itself once it has been walked in. On the mid cut, style code DQ8417 071, that reveal gets an extra surface to work with, because the collar rises over the ankle and folds as you move. Taxi is the black and yellow reading of it. Where the low version shows erosion mostly at the toe and quarter, the mid adds the collar crease to the picture, which means the pattern that emerges is closer to a record of how you actually walk.
Black and yellow reads as workwear, so dress it that way. Try loose double-knee canvas trousers, a black hoodie and a dark chore jacket, so the reveal is the brightest thing in the fit. Alternatively, washed grey sweatpants with a plain white tee lets the collar and toe erosion show clearly as it develops. Mid cuts want a slightly taller sock than a low, and the top two eyelets should be laced to keep the collar folding consistently. Wear them on real pavement, brush lightly and evenly if you want a uniform reveal, skip heavy cleaners, and never put a cupsole shoe through a washing machine.
Air Jordan sits at the centre of a collecting culture it created, one anchored to a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, where condition is usually the whole conversation. A shoe engineered to change through wear runs against that instinct on purpose. It also sits honestly beside a documented limitation in old stock: polyurethane midsoles degrade by hydrolysis and Nike has not published which PU it uses, so archive pairs are not automatically wearable. The cultural licence for a shoe like this came from hip hop, where Jordan sneakers were worn hard and referenced constantly by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z.
The upper carries a top layer over a contrasting under-layer, and flex points do the work: toe crease, quarter panel, and on this cut the ankle collar as it folds. The mid keeps padding around the ankle, so the shoe holds its shape when unlaced and gives more support than the low. Rubber cupsole and stitched sidewall underneath. Style code DQ8417 071 confirms the release. Heavy protectant coatings work against the design and should be avoided. If you want the reveal to look even rather than patchy, brush lightly and consistently across the panels rather than attacking a single spot with a cleaner.
