Released on 26 April 2021 and part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 Zoom line. This release has a leather upper in Hyper Royal/Pine Green. Califia is a Los Angeles idea before it is a shoe, and Aleali May designs from that city outward. Her women's Air Jordan 1 High takes the model Nike built after signing Michael Jordan in 1984, the shoe that made the company synonymous with basketball and then, through basketball, with hip hop, and reworks it in a soft blue register rather than the usual team colour blocking. The Zoom Comfort designation matters: this is the High rebuilt around modern cushioning instead of the flat 1985 footbed. What you get is a women's led interpretation of the most recognisable basketball silhouette Nike owns, made by a designer whose whole argument has been that this shoe was never only a men's object.
First recipe: wide leg cream or ecru trousers, a slightly oversized knit and the collar worn high with the laces loose, letting the blue read as the only colour in the fit. Second: light wash denim, a fitted tank and a leather jacket for evening, cuffing the hem so the collar and the Swoosh panel stay visible. Occasion is everywhere except rain and dance floors. Fit runs long in most Air Jordan 1 patterns, so try your usual size and half down if you swim in the toe box. Lace to the second last eyelet if the collar bites your ankle. Brush suede dry, protect before first wear, and stuff the collar when stored so the high cut does not collapse.
The Air Jordan 1 sits at the centre of Nike's cultural rise. The Jordan signing of 1984 and the Spike Lee directed advertising, in which Lee appeared as Mars Blackmon, turned a basketball shoe into a language, and from the 1980s onward Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became status markers in urban and hip hop dress before settling into mainstream American youth uniform. One correction is worth carrying: the NBA never banned the Air Jordan 1. The shoe cited under the league's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship, and Nike paid the fines. A women's collaborator remaking this silhouette is a real shift in who gets to author that history.
The Zoom Comfort platform is the real change under a familiar upper. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, the technology the brand has made visible since the 1987 Air Max, and here it sits under a high top built to be worn all day rather than for four quarters. Above it the panels follow the classic High cut and lines, executed in premium leather and suede in the Califia blue palette with tonal detailing rather than contrast. The high collar still needs breaking in across the ankle, and the leather softens into a crease pattern unique to how you walk. Suede sections are the vulnerable part: keep them away from rain and clean with a dry brush before anything wet touches them.
