Released on 25 October 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Core Black/Metallic Silver/Core Black. atmos is the Tokyo retailer that helped invent the modern sneaker collaboration culture, and its adidas work has always leaned toward wit rather than logo stacking. The Samba Tuxedo takes the most functional shoe in the adidas archive, a training shoe built for footballers on frozen ground, and dresses it for evening. The joke works because the Samba is so plainly utilitarian: black and white formalwear language applied to a gum-soled pitch shoe is a contradiction you can read from across a room. adidas has spent decades letting outside eyes reinterpret its archive, and Tokyo retailers were among the first to take that invitation seriously.
Lean into the joke or ignore it entirely, both work. First recipe: black wide trousers with a white shirt, half tucked, so the shoe completes a deliberately formal-adjacent outfit without anyone mistaking it for dress shoes. Second: raw denim with a black knit, where the contrast panelling just reads as sharp detailing. The Samba is flat, narrow and lightly cushioned, so it suits walking and standing rather than distance, and many people size up half a size. Wear a thin sock. Protect the suede before first wear, keep it out of rain, and clean the gum sidewall before dirt becomes part of the shoe.
adidas effectively invented the modern designer sneaker partnership, opening with Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 and Stella McCartney from 2004 and continuing through Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, and the retailer collaborations sit alongside that programme as its more playful wing. The Samba itself needed no help becoming culturally central: it became part of the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, the same organic adoption that made adidas matter after Run-DMC recorded My Adidas unpaid in 1986. A tuxedo Samba is that history being teased by people who know it well.
Samba OG architecture underneath: a low, flat last, a leather upper with suede overlays, the T-shaped toe reinforcement and a gum rubber outsole built for pivoting. The Three Stripes sit on the quarter panel where they were originally stitched as reinforcement. The tuxedo treatment lives in the materials and finishing, so expect the contrast between panels to be the design event rather than the silhouette. Care follows the materials rather than the theme: brush suede dry and in one direction, wipe smooth panels with a damp cloth, and clean the gum sidewall early because gum yellows once dirt sets. Shoe trees keep the T-toe from creasing hard.
