    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 May 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Gym Red/White. Bred Text puts the story on the shoe. Black and red is the palette that traces back to the earliest argument around the line, when the NBA's uniform rule required shoes to be at least 51 percent white and Nike, rather than redesign anything, paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and built the Banned advertising around the episode. That campaign taught the market that transgression sells. A Text edition takes the language of that advertising and prints it, turning ad copy into a material graphic. This is the grade school Mid, the accessible version, which is fitting: the story it carries was always aimed at people who wanted in rather than people already inside.
A graphic shoe needs plain clothing above it. Black jeans, a plain black or white tee and a grey overshirt lets the text be the only thing to read in the outfit. For a warmer take, mid grey sweats with a black hoodie keeps everything tonal so the red accent lands. Avoid slogan tees and other printed garments, since two competing texts look chaotic. The Mid takes a thicker sock well and suits cuffed hems. Grade school sizing runs smaller than men's, so convert first. Clean the leather with foam, keep any product off the printed areas, and never machine wash or soak.
The Banned advertising is the origin of sneaker marketing as narrative rather than specification. Nike did not fix the shoe, it publicised the rule, and the market learned that a story attached to a product outperforms a feature list. Every text heavy sneaker graphic since owes something to that lesson. It is also worth being precise about the history: the shoe actually cited under the uniform policy was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the Air Jordan I released, and the league did not ban the Air Jordan 1 itself. The campaign was built on the rule and the fine, and it worked far better than compliance would have.
Black across the upper with red arriving as the accent, and printed text used as a surface graphic rather than a colour block, which means the shoe changes as you get closer to it. The mid cut gives a padded ankle collar without the full high top height, the cut that dominates the grade school run because it is easier to wear and to size. Style code DM9650 001. No stack heights or material weights are published. Printed graphics on leather are the most wear sensitive element on any sneaker: they abrade at flex points long before the leather does, so avoid brushes on the printed area entirely and clean it with a soft cloth.
