Designed by Peter Moore and released on 23 March 2018 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Game Royal/Summit White-Black. Royal blue is one of the founding Air Jordan 1 stories, a colourway from the era when Nike was still guessing how big this would be. The company targeted about 3 million dollars in sales over three years; the first 50,000 pairs sold out and the shoe went on to pass 150 million dollars. Game Royal is the modern retelling of that blue: a saturated, slightly brighter read of the original idea, carried on the full Retro High outline Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore. Style code 555088 403 puts it in the long-running Retro High family, the pairs that stay closest to the 1985 pattern. Blue was never a Bulls colour, which is exactly why the shoe has always felt like the line's free space.
Blue and white wants clean, simple clothing around it. Try light-wash straight denim, a white oxford shirt worn open over a tee, and a navy cap, letting the blue panels echo the shirt. For colder weather, black slim-straight trousers, a cream fisherman knit and a navy peacoat makes the shoe the brightest object in the fit without shouting. Lace through the top eyelets for the ankle hold the high cut is designed around. Blue leather marks with road salt and rain, so treat with a colourless protector before first wear. Clean with a soft brush and mild solution, blot rather than rub the white midsole, and air dry away from heat so the panels do not stiffen.
The Air Jordan 1 is where sneaker collecting became a mass activity, and blue pairs are a big part of why the line reads as personal taste rather than team allegiance. Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, put the shoe into film language, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carried it into music. The resale market this silhouette anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, with several billion more projected. A Game Royal high sits in the part of the archive collectors treat as canon: recognisable at a glance, and not tied to any one city's colours.
You get the complete original build: collar above the ankle, ankle Wings logo, the Swoosh across the quarter and a rubber cupsole underneath. Game Royal splits the upper into blue and white blocks, so the seams and the Swoosh are read as shape, not shading. The 555088 code family is the Retro High run, which means standard Jordan 1 proportions: generous through the toe, firmer over the instep, and stiff for the first week until the panels break at the flex point. Saturated blue leather creases pale, so the first crease line across the toe will show more than it would on black. Keep them shaped when stored so those creases fall where the foot puts them.
