Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 30 November 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a patent leather upper in Black/Metallic Gold. Retro High OG means Jordan Brand is reissuing the Air Jordan 1 to the original specification rather than a reworked one, and this is the grade school version in black with metallic gold. Gold is a status colour the line reaches for when it wants to mark something rather than reference a team, and against black it turns the AJ1 into an evening shoe. The pattern is the one Peter Moore designed with Bruce Kilgore for a Chicago Bulls rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, produced for him that November and sold to the public on 1 April 1985, when the first 50,000 pairs sold out. This is that shoe, scaled for younger feet, dressed for occasion.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. Dressed up: black trousers with a slight break, a black knit or shirt, and nothing else metallic, so the gold on the shoe is the single shine in the fit. Or streetwear: black jeans, a black hoodie, and a gold detail repeated once at the chain or cap. Highs need a shorter or cuffed hem to read properly, otherwise the collar disappears. Grade school lengths run shorter than adult numbering, so check the measurement before ordering. Clean the black leather with a damp cloth and mild soap, keep brushes off the metallic panels, and store in the box so the gold does not rub against other shoes.
Influence
The Retro High OG is the format collectors care about, and the Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that created collecting as a mass activity in the first place, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market it anchors valued at roughly two billion dollars. The High also carries the Banned story, which was not a ban on this shoe: the NBA's uniform policy required at least 51 percent white, the shoe cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype worn before the Air Jordan I released, and Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and advertised around it. Black and gold is the celebratory end of that history.
Construction
OG spec means the full high collar, the original panel proportions, the Wings logo on the ankle and the Nike Air branding on the tongue, over a rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle. The upper is leather, with metallic gold applied to accent panels and hardware against a black base. Metallic finishes are a coating rather than a dye, so they scuff differently to leather: they lift at the edges and along crease lines rather than dulling evenly. Keep abrasives away from the gold entirely, wipe the black with a damp cloth, and be careful lacing and unlacing if any eyelet hardware carries the metallic treatment.
