Culture Note™
Released on 3 April 2024 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Almost Yellow/Maroon/Wonder White. Almost Yellow with maroon is an unusual pairing, a soft washed yellow against a deep wine red, and the Gazelle Bold is the silhouette built to carry unusual pairings. Bold is the raised platform version of the Gazelle, a women's line reworking that takes a low, flat gym floor shoe and lifts it onto a thick sole, changing the proportion completely. That is a fashion decision made to a heritage object, and adidas is comfortable making those because it has been doing it with outside designers for decades, from Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 through Stella McCartney since 2004. The Trefoil on the shoe still ties it back to 1971 and the 1972 Munich Olympics. Style code IF5937.
Pale yellow and maroon is a statement, so pin it down with neutrals. Wear it with off white or cream trousers and a plain white top so both colours read clearly, or with a maroon knit and black denim to pull the darker tone forward and let the yellow act as the accent. Avoid adding orange or pink. The platform adds real height and cushioning, which makes it better than a flat Gazelle for long days on your feet, though the raised sole takes a few wears to walk naturally on. Protect the pale upper before first wear, brush it dry, and clean the platform sidewall separately with a soft brush.
adidas effectively invented the fashion designer sneaker partnership, and the longest running of those, Stella McCartney's work with the brand since 2004, was specifically about women's product being designed rather than shrunk. The platform Gazelle is that principle applied in house: a silhouette from the terrace and the sports hall rebuilt for a different wardrobe rather than resized for one. The underlying cultural credit is still the old one, since the Gazelle rides the same wave that made the Superstar and the Stan Smith the base layer of European casual dressing, but the proportion here is aimed somewhere that culture never went.
The platform is the whole engineering story. Raising a Gazelle onto a thick sole adds height and cushioning that the original never had, changes the walking action because the foot sits further from the ground, and gives the upper a taller sidewall to sit against, which visually shortens the shoe and makes the toe look rounder. Against that, a pale yellow upper with maroon Three Stripes is high contrast, so every panel edge reads clearly. The stripes on adidas began as reinforcement sewn into the upper, and on a platform build they are the line that stops the shoe looking top heavy. Style code IF5937.
