Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 February 2018 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Gym Red/Summit White-Black. Bred Toe is a colour block that only makes sense if you know the two shoes it splits the difference between. Black and red is the palette Nike built its earliest Air Jordan advertising on, using the league's requirement that shoes be at least 51 percent white and the 5,000 dollar per game fine it was willing to pay rather than redesign. White and red is the other half of the Chicago identity. This Retro High OG puts a red toe against black and white panelling, so the shoe reads as both arguments at once. The OG designation means the original proportions and the Wings mark of the earliest era rather than the Jumpman the line adopted from the third model onward.
Utility
Two recipes. First, black wide leg trousers with a white tee and nothing else, letting the red toe be the only accent in the entire outfit. Second, mid wash denim, cuffed once, with a black bomber, which lets all three colours in the shoe find something to talk to. The high top wants a trouser that either stacks over the collar or stops above it, never one that catches halfway. Size true to length with a snug midfoot. Protect the white leather before first wear, clean white and red panels with separate cloths, and store with shoe trees so the collar keeps its shape.
Influence
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that turned collecting into a mass activity, and pairs from 1985 have reached around 20,000 dollars on StockX inside a resale market valued at roughly two billion dollars. Bred Toe sits inside that economy because it is a colour block rather than a collaboration: it earns its position on design logic alone. The 1 has also carried Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme, KAWS and Travis Scott's Cactus Jack version, which is why the base silhouette has more cultural surface area than any other model Jordan Brand makes. Owning an OG high is owning that surface area directly.
Construction
Retro High OG builds reproduce the 1985 shape: full ankle collar, the original panel geometry Peter Moore laid out with Bruce Kilgore, and the Wings logo that marks the earliest era of the line. Nike Air cushioning arrived at the second model, so a 1 sits firmer underfoot than modern foam sneakers and breaks in through the upper rather than the sole. Three panel colour blocking is demanding to own because each colour ages differently: the white will yellow, the red will fade in sunlight, and the black will hold. Clean the white first and separately, never let a red panel sit wet against white, and keep the pair out of prolonged direct sun. Expect toe creasing from week one.
