Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 June 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a nubuck upper in Black/Muslin/Tech Grey/White/Sail. Black Cement belongs to the Air Jordan 3, where Tinker Hatfield introduced the grey cracked elephant print and put the Jumpman on the tongue, and moving that name onto a Retro Low OG version of the Air Jordan 1 is a deliberate collision of two chapters. The 1 is the shoe Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, made for Jordan on 17 November 1984 and released publicly on 1 April 1985. The 3 is the shoe that turned the line into a design series with its own vocabulary. Cement grey is the most portable piece of that vocabulary, and a Low OG carries the original panel proportions rather than a modernised low top, so the citation lands on the correct shape.
Utility
Black and grey asks for nothing and goes with everything. First: black denim, a grey tee, a black overshirt, socks grey, the whole fit tonal so the cement detailing reads as texture rather than as trim. Second: olive or khaki work trousers and a white tee, letting the shoe anchor the bottom of a warmer palette. Nothing needs to match it, which is the practical argument for this colourway over any archive scheme. Very well suited to daily city wear and dusty conditions. Brush the textured areas dry and often, use foam only on the smooth black leather, avoid solvents, and keep the pair away from heat sources when drying.
Influence
The Jumpman that arrived with the cement era is the brand's house mark, a silhouette of Jordan mid leap with legs split. Peter Moore had Jordan recreate that pose in Bulls gear after seeing a Jacobus Rentmeester photograph shot before the 1984 Olympics, and Rentmeester sued Nike in 2015 over it before the Ninth Circuit affirmed dismissal in a two to one decision in February 2018, holding the images not substantially similar. That history sits under every cement coloured release. Around it, the shoe's cultural life ran through Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising and through rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z.
Construction
The Retro Low OG format keeps the toe cap, quarter and heel counter as separate pieces exactly as the 1985 pattern specified, cut below the ankle, which gives the Swoosh more surface than modern lows allow. A black based execution with cement grey detailing puts the texture where it does the most work, since a broken pattern hides marks that flat black would show as pale scuffs. Nike Air did not reach the signature line until the Air Jordan 2, so this is flat and firm underfoot, stable rather than cushioned. Grey textured areas trap dust in their surface, so a dry brush before any wet cleaning is the difference between a clean shoe and a permanently grey one.
