    Culture Note™

Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 4 May 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a nubuck upper in Black/Cement Grey/Summit White/Fire Red. Bred is the compression of black and red, and it is the oldest argument in the line. When Jordan arrived, the NBA's uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, and the shoe cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype he wore before the Air Jordan I released. Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and built the Banned advertising around the whole episode instead of redesigning anything. That decision taught the sneaker market that transgression sells, and black over red became the palette that carries the memory. On the Air Jordan 4, a Tinker Hatfield design from the era when the series had found its own language, the black and red split reads as inheritance rather than costume.
Keep the styling severe and the shoe does the talking. Raw indigo or black selvedge denim with a slight stack, a white tee, a black leather or coach jacket, no other red anywhere. Alternatively run it tonal with black cargos and a grey hoodie so the red midsole is the single warm line in an otherwise cold outfit. The 4 has a wide, flat footprint, so it sits better under a straight or slightly loose leg than under anything tapered. It handles autumn and winter dressing well and cold weather does the black upper favours. Clean the midsole with a soft brush and mild soap, keep water off the upper where you can, and let it air dry away from direct heat.
The Banned campaign is the reason black and red is legible to people who have never watched a game. Nike turned a league rule into advertising, and the sneaker market learned that a shoe with a story outsells a shoe with a spec sheet. That lesson built the collecting culture that followed: Air Jordan is the shoe that made sneaker collecting a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and a resale market anchored by the line valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Bred colourways sit at the centre of that trade because they are the visual shorthand for the origin story, not a seasonal idea somebody had recently.
Black dominates the upper with red arriving at the midsole and branding, which is the classic Bred logic: the colour is an accent that changes the whole shoe. The 4 is defined by its cage panels and the wings at the eyestays, hardware that turns lacing into a visible structural system rather than a hidden one. Nike Air cushioning runs through the line from the Air Jordan II onward and sits under the foot here. Style code 308497 060 identifies the pair. Beyond that, treat unpublished measurements with suspicion: nobody outside the factory has the stack heights. Retro midsoles use polyurethane foams that degrade by hydrolysis over long storage, and the formulation is not disclosed, so wear rotation beats hoarding.
