The Air Jordan 4 sits in the stretch when Tinker Hatfield turned the series into a design programme with its own language, after the 3 introduced the elephant print and moved the Jumpman onto the tongue. Where the 1 is a leather shoe with panels, the 4 is a piece of engineering you can see: moulded lace cages, mesh windows, visible cushioning. A Rare Air execution with white lettering leans on that visibility, treating typography on the upper as a design element rather than a label. It is a very Hatfield idea, using the shoe's own hardware and branding as decoration, and it works because the 4 has more surfaces to write on than any earlier model in the line.
