The Dunk started life as a college basketball shoe. Peter Moore sketched it as the College Color High, built to carry team colours onto the floor, and Nike pushed it out through the Be True To Your School campaign with Michigan, Kentucky, Iowa, Georgetown, Syracuse, St John's and UNLV. It was a mash up from day one: outsole traction lifted from the Air Jordan 1, an upper borrowing from the Jordan 1 and the Terminator, a mould taken from the Legend. The Panda is the most resold sneaker in StockX history, holding the number one and number three best selling slots across men's and women's sizing, with some sizes trading past four hundred dollars. Nike answers that demand by restocking it in the thousands, which puts it in the super general release tier next to the Triple White Air Force 1 and the Air Max 90. The ubiquity became its own argument: half the internet calls it played out, and it keeps outselling everything regardless. In India it is the default first Dunk, the pair worn to class, to the office and to a wedding after party in one week. The padded low collar clears your ankle bone without adding bulk. Flat rubber underfoot delivers grip on smooth surfaces and a low, close to the ground ride, the reason skaters stayed loyal to this sole unit long after basketball moved on.
