Part of the Ora Recovery Slide line. This release has a eva upper in Grey/Grey. A grey ORA Recovery Slide 3 is the least demonstrative thing in Hoka's catalogue, and that is the point. Recovery footwear is a category the brand can speak to with authority because of who wears its shoes: ultrarunners coming off long mountain efforts and clinical staff finishing twelve hour shifts. Since 2013 Hoka has belonged to Deckers Brands, the group that also owns UGG and Teva, which is to say a house that understands comfort footwear as a category rather than as an afterthought. Grey is the tone that lets a slide travel between a changing room, a hotel corridor and a front doorstep without ever looking like sports equipment.
Two ways to use it. First, straight after effort: shorts, a loose tee, bare feet, worn from the changing room onward while your feet spread out again. Second, around the house and nearby: grey joggers, a sweatshirt, worn for the errands that do not justify laces. Grey pairs with almost any loungewear, which is why it outlasts brighter recovery pieces in a wardrobe. Slides run long, so take the size that keeps your heel just inside the back edge. Rinse with cold water and mild soap, scrub the footbed now and then, and let it dry completely before wearing barefoot again.
Recovery is now a visible part of how people dress, not a private ritual, and slides carry most of that visibility. You see them at races, outside gyms, in hospital changing rooms and on the walk home from work, and Hoka has standing in all of those places because its cushioning was proved in ultramarathon and mountain racing before it was ever a comfort proposition. Add the fashion wave, where the brand's maximal silhouette was read as running's answer to the chunky sneaker, and a plain grey slide becomes something people wear in public on purpose rather than only between a locker and a car.
A slide is a footbed, a strap and a decision about how much foam is appropriate. Hoka's decision is always more, tempered by its design target of a low weight to cushion ratio so that thickness does not become weight. Grey is the sensible middle ground for something worn barefoot: darker than sand, so it hides dust and floor grime, lighter than black, so the contour of the footbed stays visible rather than collapsing into shadow. Let your foot sit fully inside the footbed rather than hanging over the front edge, and wash the footbed occasionally, because a surface used without socks needs more cleaning than a lined shoe ever will.
