Part of the Ora Recovery Slide line. This release has a eva upper in Shifting Sand/Shifting Sand. Shifting Sand is the colour of a slide that lives outdoors. The ORA Recovery Slide 3 belongs to the end of the effort rather than the effort itself, which in Hoka's world is a serious moment: this is a brand whose reputation was made in ultramarathon and mountain racing, where what you put on after a long descent matters to whether you can run the next day. A warm sand tone reads as trail head car park and campsite rather than gym floor, and it flatters the sculpted footbed by keeping the whole shape in one soft, low contrast register.
Two ways to use it. First, straight after effort: shorts, a loose tee, bare feet, the slide worn from the finish line or the changing room while your feet decompress. Second, in warm weather: sand or olive shorts, a camp collar shirt, no socks, the tone tying into an earth palette. Keep it away from mud, which stains a light footbed quickly. Slides run long, so take the size that holds your heel just inside the rear edge. Rinse with cold water after sand or salt, scrub the footbed with mild soap, and dry in shade so the warm tone stays even.
Recovery footwear at races is almost a uniform, pulled on in the minutes after a finish line while the shoes that did the work are abandoned. Hoka has genuine standing in that scene: the brand became a mainstay at Western States and UTMB and is now title sponsor of UTMB, and Jim Walmsley, its defining athlete, won Western States multiple times before becoming the first American man to win UTMB in 2023 with a course record. A warm neutral slide is the piece of that culture most people actually own, the visible end of a sport that most of its audience follows rather than runs.
Everything a slide does comes from the footbed contour and the strap, since there is no upper to hold you. Hoka builds the platform the way it builds its shoes, aiming for a low weight to cushion ratio so that a thick sole does not feel like ballast on tired legs. Sand tones are honest about dust and terrible about mud, so this is a colourway for dry ground rather than wet fields. Let your foot sit fully within the footbed instead of overhanging the front, rinse after any sand or salt exposure, and wash the footbed periodically, because barefoot wear leaves more behind than sock wear does.
