Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 5 April 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the University Blue/White colourway. White Aluminum is the Air Jordan 1 Low at its most restrained: a white base with a soft pale blue grey accent that barely raises its voice. The parent shoe was designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, made for Michael Jordan on 17 November 1984 and released publicly on 1 April 1985, the result of Nike signing a Chicago Bulls rookie for six years and about 2.5 million dollars with a royalty on sales, a deal roughly three times any other in the league. Nike wanted a young player's identity because it was losing basketball to Converse and adidas. Forty years on, the Low in a quiet women's colourway is how that origin story reaches people who never watched a Bulls game.
Utility
Pale blue grey wants soft neighbours. Wear it with off white wide leg denim and a cream knit for a tonal look where the Aluminum panel is the only cool tone in the outfit. The other direction is navy: a navy pleated midi or navy tailored trousers with a white shirt, letting the shoe bridge the two. It suits daytime, travel and long walking days, and the low collar means it works with cropped hems and bare ankles. Sizing runs long and narrow, so a half size down is usual. Pre treat the white leather with a protectant, clean marks the same day they happen, and keep a shoe tree or paper in the toe box because white leather creases are permanent once set.
Influence
Air Jordan built its cultural weight through basketball meeting hip hop, with Spike Lee directing the earliest advertising as Mars Blackmon opposite Michael Jordan and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z naming the shoes in their music. The Banned campaign leaned on the NBA rule requiring shoes at least 51 percent white, with Nike paying the 5,000 dollar per game fine and building marketing on it, though the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype worn before the 1 released. Jordan Brand today runs a roster from Jayson Tatum and Luka Doncic to Maya Moore and Jordin Canada, and pale, low key women's colourways are how the 1 stays in daily rotation rather than in a display case.
Construction
This is the pre Air part of the line. Nike Air cushioning arrived with the Air Jordan II, so the 1 Low rides on a stitched rubber cupsole with a flat foam bed, firm and low to the ground. The Low cut drops the collar below the ankle, which is why it wears more like a court shoe than a basketball shoe and why it takes a trouser hem cleanly. A white leather upper is the least forgiving finish in the line: it shows every scuff and every crease across the toe box, and the Aluminum accent will look tired long before the white does if you let dust settle into it. Protect it before first wear rather than after the first mark.
