Origin
Designed by Charlotte Lee and part of New Balance's 1906L line. This release has a suede upper in Black. Black suede on the 1906L is the most direct way New Balance has of saying this is not a sports shoe. The 1906L takes the brand's Y2K running architecture and flattens it into a lower, dressier stance, and finishing it in black suede finishes the argument, because suede belongs to shoemaking rather than to performance. There is a logic to New Balance ending up here. The company began in 1906 as the New Balance Arch Support Company, serving people who stood all day, and a low, soft, supportive shoe in a serious material is arguably a truer descendant of that brief than anything with a foam stack.
Utility
This is the New Balance you can wear to dinner. Recipe one is dark tailoring: charcoal wool trousers, a black fine gauge knit, a navy coat, where the suede reads as a soft shoe rather than a sneaker. Recipe two is denim done sharp: black straight jeans with a grey shirt, so the shoe stays the darkest point in the outfit. The low stance means it works with a shorter break where a chunky runner would not. Best for evenings, offices and travel days that end somewhere smart. Suede care is non-negotiable: protect it before first wear, brush with a crepe or rubber brush, never soak it, and keep it out of rain.
Influence
Black suede is where sneaker culture and grown-up dressing meet, and New Balance got there by being unfashionable first. The 990 family became the American dad shoe, plain and comfort-driven, with documented wearers including Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, then normcore and high fashion reclaimed grey suede as a design position in the 2010s. That reclamation is exactly what makes a black suede New Balance credible under tailoring today. The brand formalised the archive-as-fashion idea by appointing Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, and its collaborations have always run through designers rather than mass celebrity.
Construction
Suede changes how a technical silhouette reads. Where a mesh upper shows every panel, black suede absorbs light and unifies the layers, so the shape is read through the shadow between panels and through the stitching, with the side wall block N registering as texture more than as a logo. On the lower profile 1906L stance, the midsole runs long and flat rather than stacking at the heel. New Balance's cushioning identity still sits underneath: ENCAP encapsulates a soft EVA core in a moulded polyurethane rim for support with low compression set, and ABZORB is the softer blend aimed at dispersing heel strike. Width fittings are the right way to fine tune the fit.
