The Dunk exists because Nike needed one shoe it could recolour for every college programme it outfitted, and the shoe's fixed two layer panel map is what made that possible. The Split series pushes the idea to its logical end by cutting the upper vertically so two colourways share a single shoe. This is the Chicago version, using the red and white pairing that runs through the most recognisable moments in Nike's basketball history. Style code DZ2536 600 places it in the modern Dunk Low run. Where a normal Dunk quotes one team, a split pair quotes the system itself, which is a more knowing kind of design and reads as such.
A graphic shoe wants a plain outfit. Go with black straight leg jeans, a white tee and a black jacket so the split is the only pattern you are wearing. The second recipe uses the red deliberately: grey sweatpants, a red cap, white tee, letting the two ends of the shoe talk to two points in the outfit. Avoid busy prints entirely. Dunks run long, so consider a half size down if your foot is narrow. The white panels and midsole scuff fast, so clean them with foam cleaner and a soft brush before marks set, and keep red leather away from prolonged wet, which can shadow the white side of the split permanently.
Red and white is the colour pair that carries the most weight in Nike basketball, and Chicago as a designation attaches this to the Air Jordan story that the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising turned into a mainstream cultural event. The Dunk itself came up through college basketball and skateboarding before joining Air Force 1s and Air Max models as everyday wear across American youth dress. A split colourway is the sneaker world commenting on its own conventions, and it only works because those conventions are now so widely understood that the joke lands without explanation.
Leather over leather in the standard Dunk arrangement, base and overlay, with the split running down the shoe so the panel colours swap sides at the centre line. That construction demands clean stitching, since the seam becomes the visual event of the shoe rather than a hidden join. The collar carries a low foam roll, the toe box is perforated, and a rubber cupsole with herringbone forefoot tread sits underneath, a pattern taken from indoor court traction. There is no visible Air. The Dunk's flat, wide, low platform is exactly what lets a design this graphic work, because the shoe is essentially a canvas with a sole.
