Yeezy Boost 350 V2 CMPCT 'Slate Onyx
Yeezy Boost 350 V2 CMPCT 'Slate Onyx
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
CMPCT is the pared down version of the 350 V2, a cleaner and quieter take on the silhouette that appeared very late in the line's life, and Slate Onyx is its darkest expression. Onyx keeps the stone naming logic the label has used since Pirate Black and Moonrock, while Slate identifies the CMPCT family it belongs to. On an all dark pair the simplification is easy to miss and easy to appreciate: with no contrast anywhere and no logo, you are left reading the profile of a shoe that spent years being one of the most recognisable outlines in footwear. Pairs like this reached buyers through the sell through of remaining stock after the adidas partnership ended.
Utility
A black knit runner with no branding is the easiest sneaker to place in a wardrobe. Recipe one: black wide leg trousers with a slight break and a black crewneck, where the shoe simply extends the leg line. Recipe two: dark grey suiting trousers worn casually with a white shirt untucked, a smart casual move that works because the shoe is knit rather than leather and has no logo to break the formality. Take your true size and expect Primeknit to settle in fast. Black knit hides dust but shows salt marks in winter, so wipe with cold water and a soft brush after wet weather and dry naturally, away from heaters.
Influence
This silhouette turned the limited sneaker release into a mainstream cultural event, and everything that followed, the queue culture, the bot buying, the resale economy, grew from it. By the time the CMPCT variants shipped, that machine had stopped: adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022, stating that recent comments and actions by founder Kanye West were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous and violated its values, and remaining inventory was sold through afterwards. Slate Onyx is therefore best understood as a closing note on the model rather than a new release, which is part of why the all black version has held its appeal.
Construction
Primeknit forms the upper as a single machine knitted piece, worked here in a single dark tone so the only visible variation comes from how the knit tightens across the midfoot and opens at the collar. The CMPCT treatment strips back surface detail, which suits a monochrome finish because there is nothing competing for attention. Under it sits adidas Boost, the expanded TPU pellet foam that gives the 350 family its rebound and speckled sidewall, with rubber at the ground contact points. Entry is through the knit collar with a heel pull tab. No visible branding appears anywhere on the shoe, in keeping with the whole adidas era catalogue.
