Part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a mesh upper. Dark Royal with brown is an unusual pairing, cool and warm forced together, and the 9060 is the right shoe for that kind of argument. The model exists to distort the 99x running family into something sculpted and contemporary, so a colourway that refuses to be tidy suits its purpose. Where the pale and tonal versions of this shoe try to soften its strangeness, this one accepts it. New Balance has been privately held under Jim Davis since 1972, which has let it design without quarterly pressure to please everyone, and shoes like this are what that independence buys: a silhouette and a palette that both take a position.
Blue and brown want earth tones around them. Recipe one: brown or chocolate trousers, a cream knit and a navy jacket, an outfit that splits the same warm and cool difference the shoe does. Recipe two: dark straight jeans, a tan corduroy overshirt and a plain tee, a relaxed autumn build where the brown panels tie the look together. Good for cold and dry weather, city walking and travel, and better than pale colourways when conditions turn. Check your width fitting. New Balance's design confidence rests on a foundation of pure function. The company built its identity on two things competitors abandoned, domestic manufacturing and technical fit, opening a UK factory at Workington in 1982, moving it to Flimby in 1991 and keeping New England production alive, and it launched a resale programme called Reconsidered in 2024 to keep its shoes in circulation. That is a brand thinking in decades. The 9060 is its most contemporary shape, and unusual colour pairings are how the design team tests the silhouette's range without touching the archive models people are protective of.
Deep blue and brown separate cleanly across the 9060's layered upper, so the panels read as distinct pieces rather than as one moulded form. Brown suede or textile sections warm up an otherwise cold palette, and the sculpted midsole carries the shape through the middle of the shoe. The block N sits on the side wall as the house mark. New Balance's cushioning heritage frames what sits underfoot: ENCAP, a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core for structure, durability and low compression set, and ABZORB, the softer foam and rubber polymer blend built to disperse heel strike impact.
