Released on 15 May 2024 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Vintage Rose/Sea Salt/Silver Metallic. Vintage Rose Sea Salt is the 9060 pretending it has been in a wardrobe for twenty years. The 9060 itself is a modern invention that borrows the panel structure and midsole geometry of New Balance's 99x runners and inflates them into sculpture, so there is no actual archive shoe behind it. That makes the faded rose and off white palette a piece of fiction, and a good one. The brand's real archive is full of colours that aged rather than launched this way, and building the aged version deliberately is the sort of move a company can only make once its ordinariness has been converted into a design language.
Lean soft: cream or stone wide trousers, an off white tee, a grey or camel overshirt, so the rose reads as a faded note inside a neutral outfit. The second recipe pushes contrast, washed indigo denim with a navy knit, where the pale shoe becomes the brightest thing in the fit. This is a walking and travel shoe for long days rather than a training shoe, and the tall midsole prefers a clean hem at the ankle. Protect the suede and mesh before first wear, brush dry rather than wet clean, and treat the off white midsole early with mild soap. Monsoon water will stain the seams permanently.
New Balance built its cultural standing without a plan. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, and normcore and then high fashion reclaimed that plainness through the 2010s until grey suede was a stated position. The 9060 is the shape produced after that argument had been won, and faded colourways like this one are the brand playing with nostalgia it does not strictly have. It matches the way New Balance now runs design, formalised when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021.
The upper layers mesh with suede and synthetic overlays across the 9060's segmented panelling, with sea salt off white holding the base and a dusty rose warming the overlays so the seams read as soft transitions rather than hard breaks. Underfoot New Balance uses ABZORB, its proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend that disperses heel strike impact before it travels up into the knees and hips, and the exaggerated midsole gives it real depth to work through. Softer and lighter than ENCAP and less structurally supportive, it delivers cushioning rather than stability. Pale rose is the harder version to keep. Take the width fitting that matches your foot and be honest about length, because the volume is generous.
