Culture Note™
Released on 20 October 2023 and part of the Ultra 4D line. This release has a primeknit upper in Vivid Red/Cloud White/Core Black. adidas likes to be caught engineering. This is a company that sold the adidas 1 in 2005 as the world's first intelligent shoe, with a microprocessor performing five million calculations a second to adjust cushioning, and that replaced foam with splayed blades on springblade. The Ultra 4D is the current expression of that appetite, and pairing it with Marvel's Spider-Man 2 gives the engineering a character to hang on. adidas effectively invented the modern collaboration model, from Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line and Stella McCartney's work since 2004 through Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons, Pharrell Williams, Bad Bunny and Beyonce, so a pop-culture partnership on its most technical silhouette is entirely in character.
Two recipes. All black, tapered joggers and a black tee, so the lattice midsole and the themed colour detailing are the only things happening. Or dark denim with a red or blue layer picked up from the shoe's own palette, which is the more literal way to wear a character collaboration and works if you keep everything else plain. It is comfortable for long standing and city walking. Size true to your usual adidas running length. Brush the knit upper dry, clean the lattice with a soft brush rather than a cloth since dirt sits in the structure, and keep it out of a washing machine.
Character collaborations sit at the accessible end of a partnership culture adidas built at the luxury end first, and the Ultra 4D is where that meets the brand's most futuristic hardware. It works because the shoe already looks like a prop: a lattice sole under a knit upper needs very little help to look like it came from a film. The value here is in the object, not in any claim about who wore it, and the Marvel tie is stated on the shoe itself rather than implied. It also lands differently from a designer collaboration, aimed at people who want the shoe to be fun rather than exclusive.
The midsole is the whole argument: a 4D unit built as a single moulded lattice rather than a slab of foam, so the structure itself provides the cushioning and the geometry is visible from the side. That is a very different proposition from Boost, the thermoplastic polyurethane adidas developed with BASF and launched in 2013, which gets its bounce from fused pellets. Above it sits a knit upper with the Three Stripes doing their usual structural job as a cage around the midfoot, plus colour and detailing tied to the Spider-Man 2 theme. Expect a firm, springy ride and a silhouette that reads as machined rather than moulded.
