Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 16 September 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a denim upper in Cinnabar/Hemp/White. Blue and red on an Air Jordan 1 is a deliberate provocation, because the model's home palette is Chicago red, black and white, and the 23 alongside it works as a brand colour in itself. Swapping in blue changes the shoe's allegiance while keeping Peter Moore's 1984 panel geometry intact. The Mid is the cut most people actually live in: collar above the ankle, less ceremony than a High, more presence than a Low. The Air Jordan 1 sold out its initial 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars in sales after reaching the public on 1 April 1985, and the Mid is how that shape reached a generation who were never buying it for basketball in the first place.
Give the colour space. Recipe one: black straight leg jeans with a slight cuff, a plain white tee, and a red or navy cap to echo one of the two tones without matching both. Recipe two: navy trackpants tapered at the ankle with a blue hoodie, letting the red panels be the single break in a monochrome blue fit. Avoid pairing with a third strong colour: two is already plenty. Mids run true to size, half up for wide feet. Lace them fully so the collar supports the ankle rather than folding. Clean leather with a damp cloth and mild soap, dry away from heat, and use shoe trees to stop the toe crease deepening.
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that made sneaker collecting a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market it anchors valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Its cultural charge came from hip hop as much as basketball: 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z all referenced Jordan and his sneakers, and Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising put the model on screen. Loud two colour Mids are the direct descendants of that era, when a bold Air Jordan 1 was a statement about which side of the culture you stood on rather than a quiet wardrobe decision.
The Mid keeps the original panel layout, toe, quarter, heel counter and Swoosh cut as separate pieces, and raises the collar so it sits above the ankle bone with a padded top line. Blue and red split across those panels is high contrast blocking, which makes every seam legible and every crease visible, so the shoe ages loudly rather than quietly. Nike Air cushioning has underpinned the line since the Air Jordan II. Style code DM4352 600 marks this colourway. The practical read is straightforward: a Mid gives you more ankle coverage and a taller stance than the Low, and it needs a trouser break or a cuff that acknowledges the extra height.
