The New Balance 9060 Rain Cloud is a volume shoe, so give it volume to sit against. Recipe one: wide-leg or straight jeans in mid or dark wash with a stacked hem over the toe box, oversized grey or cream sweatshirt, and the whole fit stays tonal while the sole does the shouting. Recipe two: black or olive cargo trousers with a light jacket and a plain tee, so the grey upper works as a neutral connector between top and bottom. Sizing is straightforward: the 9060 fits true to size, so buy your usual New Balance number and only account for thicker socks. For care, spray the suede before first wear, brush the mesh dry rather than scrubbing it wet, and keep them out of direct sun so the tooling does not yellow.

The 9060 became the shoe that defined the chunky, Y2K-adjacent turn in sneakers, and it did it fast. Joe Freshgoods launched it, Bodega followed with Age of Discovery, Mowalola brought a fashion edge, and New Balance later put it on Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in 2024. Rain Cloud is the one that keeps getting cited as the entry point, the grey pair people buy first and end up wearing most, because grey is New Balance's home colour and this is the version with the most texture in it. It is loud in silhouette and quiet in colour, which is exactly the balance that made the 9060 the default alternative to the 990 for a younger crowd.

The upper mixes breathable mesh with pigskin suede overlays and leather at the wear points, which is why the greys read as several different shades in light rather than one flat colour. The two sides differ: the lateral N is solid, the medial N is deconstructed into parallel lines, with silver accents across both. Underneath is where the money went. Lee built the podular midsole from scratch around ABZORB cushioning, with ABZORB SBS in the heel, so the ride is soft without feeling vague. The heel CR device is thickened and offset for what Lee called a magnifying glass effect. The outsole runs six oversized tread structures with diamond centres, a nod to the 860's grip. Check the tongue badge: it reworks the jewelled ABZORB pod from the 991.
