Released on 9 December 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Preloved Ruby/Cream White/Gum. Preloved Ruby is a deep, dusty red that adidas uses when it wants a colour to look aged rather than new, and against cream it produces one of the softest Samba pairs the brand makes. Nothing about this reads as sportswear at first glance, which is the trick: the outline is a shoe built for a court, the palette belongs to a vintage rack. The Samba survives because adidas has never had a reason to redraw it, in keeping with a company founded by a man who made shoes for individual events and then refined them rather than replacing them. The cream body carries the volume and the ruby lands on the stripes and heel.
Two recipes. Cream or oatmeal wide trousers with a cream knit, a full tonal build where the ruby stripes are the only line of colour. Or washed light denim with a burgundy or brown knit, letting the shoe connect to the top half. It is a daytime and dry-weather shoe, good for long walking, poor in monsoon splash given the cream base. Size true and expect a narrow last. Spray the suede toe before first wear, wipe the cream leather regularly rather than deeply, brush dust off before it grinds in, and clean the gum sole with plain water. Swap the laces for a fresh set once the originals grey, because cream shows tired laces immediately.
Faded, vintage-referencing colourways became the way people distinguished themselves once the standard Sambas were on every street, and adidas leaned into it because the archive is its most reliable asset. adidas Originals became the base layer of European casual and terrace dressing precisely because the shapes were old enough to feel neutral, and a colour like Preloved Ruby extends that neutrality into something warmer. It reads as a shoe you have owned for years, which is the effect the name is describing. It also flatters a wardrobe that is not built around sportswear at all, which is the widest audience the Samba has ever had and the reason the silhouette keeps outliving its own trend cycles.
A cream leather upper with suede reinforcement across the toe, ruby-toned stitched Three Stripes and a gum-family rubber outsole. On adidas footwear the stripes began as structural stitching that held the upper in shape, and on a two-tone pair like this you can see that role clearly because the coloured rows sit exactly where the shoe flexes. Cream is the least forgiving Samba base after white, so the toe suede and the sole edge are the panels to protect. Low and narrow underfoot with a slim profile, so it disappears under a trouser hem. Expect the leather to soften and crease across the forefoot quickly.
