Released on 30 April 2024 and part of adidas's adiFOM Superstar Mule line. This release has a eva upper in Cloud White/Core Black/Cloud White. Take the Superstar, a 1969 basketball shoe whose moulded rubber shell toe was made to protect players' feet under the basket, remove the heel, and mould the whole thing from foam. That is the adiFOM Superstar Mule, and it is a genuinely strange object: the most historically loaded silhouette adidas owns, rebuilt as something you kick on at the door. White with Black keeps the original's colour logic intact, so the reference survives the transformation even though almost nothing else does. The mule format is the real change. A shoe that was designed to be laced tight for a sport is now a shoe you step into without bending down.
This is a shoe for the parts of the day that are not events. Grey sweat shorts, an oversized tee and white crew socks makes it a home and neighbourhood shoe, and that is the honest use. For going out, black wide leg trousers and a black hoodie with the white foam popping at ankle level is the most it can carry. Socks are not optional unless you want the foam to hold odour. Backless means no support, so it is wrong for long walking or for wet streets where a mule slips. Rinse with cool water and mild soap, dry in shade, and never leave it in a car.
The Superstar earned its place twice: on court, worn by a reported 75 percent of NBA players by 1973 with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin among the early adopters, and then in music, where Run-DMC took it up without payment. adidas sold over 15 million pairs in 2015 alone, its best selling shoe of that year, which is how a shape becomes common property. A backless foam version only makes sense against that history. Nobody would recognise this silhouette in outline if the original had not been worn to death for fifty years, and the mule is adidas cashing in that recognition for convenience.
One piece moulded foam replaces leather, rubber and stitching, and the shell toe survives as a ribbed relief across the front rather than a separate cap. Removing the heel changes how it fits: with no counter holding your foot back, the instep does all the work, so the volume of your foot decides the fit rather than the laces. The black detailing sits against a white foam body, marking the stripes and branding. Foam is light, water tolerant and rinses clean, which makes this the most practical Superstar ever made. It is also heat sensitive, so keep it out of direct sun and hot cars where moulded foam warps permanently.
