Designed by Ben Herath and released on 17 August 2019 as part of adidas's UltraBoost line. This release has a primeknit upper in Multicolor/White/Gum. This is an Ultraboost built with the retailer Nice Kicks around the fiftieth anniversary of Woodstock, which makes it a rare thing: a technical running shoe used as a piece of music history. The Ultraboost is the flagship of Boost, the thermoplastic polyurethane adidas developed with the German chemical company BASF and launched in its running line in 2013, and it is the shoe that made cushioning itself a status object. Wrapping that engineering in a festival anniversary theme is a very adidas move, because the brand's cultural life has always come from music as much as from sport, going back to Run-DMC writing My Adidas unpaid in 1986.
First outfit: plain and neutral, grey or black joggers with a white tee, so the themed detailing on the shoe is the only pattern in play. Second: light denim with a plain sweatshirt, using the Boost midsole as the comfort argument on a long day of walking. This is a genuine all day shoe, best for travel, city days and standing for hours, and it is still a capable runner if you want to use it as one. Buy true to size with a snug knit fit. Clean the midsole regularly, air them out after long wear, and keep them out of the sun to slow yellowing.
adidas entered culture twice, once through sport and once through music it did not pay for, and the second route has proved more durable. My Adidas was released on 29 May 1986, and that July at Madison Square Garden the group had the crowd hold up their shell toes while an adidas executive watched, a scene Questlove has called hip hop's tipping point. A Woodstock anniversary Ultraboost reaches for a different music history entirely, and it works because adidas has spent decades being a canvas for whatever culture wanted to project onto it.
Boost is the reason to own an Ultraboost. It is formed from thousands of fused TPU pellets, and the bounce comes from how the material is processed rather than from the raw polymer, which gives higher energy return than standard EVA foam and more stable behaviour across temperatures, so it does not go dead in cold weather. That midsole is exposed around the full perimeter of the shoe, which is why it discolours if you neglect it. Clean the midsole with a soft brush and mild solution, keep it out of prolonged sunlight, and avoid bleach based whiteners, which yellow the foam. Anniversary editions carry printed detailing, so wash by hand rather than by machine.
