Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 28 September 2018 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Dark Concord-White. Concord is a name with weight in this line. It belongs to the era of the Air Jordan XI, the model that put patent leather on a basketball court and made the series formal enough that people wore it with suits. Dark concord on a Jordan 1 Mid pulls that deep purple back onto the first silhouette, the shoe Peter Moore designed with Bruce Kilgore for a Chicago rookie Nike had signed in October 1984 on a six year deal. Purple is not a Bulls colour and never was, which is exactly why it works here: it takes the most recognisable basketball shape of the century and removes the team from it entirely.
Purple wants darkness around it. Recipe one: black tailored trousers with a clean hem, a black knit, a grey overcoat, so the shoe is the only chromatic thing you own that day. Recipe two: dark indigo denim, a cream heavyweight tee, a black leather jacket, with black socks so the purple starts at the shoe. Avoid navy: it sits close enough to dark purple to look like a mistake. Mids work with a hem just at the collar. This is an evening and cold weather colourway. Keep any glossy panel away from abrasion, wipe with a soft dry cloth, and store out of direct sun since deep dyes fade first.
Patent leather arrived in the line on the Air Jordan XI and changed what a basketball shoe was allowed to be, bringing formal wear material into performance footwear, and it is the reason a purple and black Jordan reads as dressy rather than sporty. That instinct runs through the brand's collaboration programme too, where Dior and Comme des Garcons have worked on Jordan silhouettes alongside streetwear partners like Supreme, KAWS and Off-White under Virgil Abloh. The through line is that this shape absorbs formality without losing its origin. It began as a court shoe for a rookie Nike bought cheaply, and it has since been dressed up by luxury houses without ever needing to change silhouette.
The Mid holds a collar around the ankle without reaching the height of the original high cut, so the purple panels cover less real estate than they would on an OG and the colour reads as accent rather than statement. Dark concord is deep enough to behave like a neutral in low light and only shows itself as purple under sun or direct lamp, which is the most useful property a coloured sneaker can have. Deep tones flatten seams, so the toe box and swoosh do most of the shape work. No full material sheet has been published for this colourway, so confirm the panel finish and whether any surface is glossy before assuming how it will crease.
