Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 21 December 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a nubuck upper in Loyal Blue/White/Habanero Red/Black. Winterized is a word that only makes sense once a basketball shoe has stopped being a basketball shoe. The Air Jordan 4 comes from the stretch after Tinker Hatfield took the line into a design series of its own, and by the time a retro carries a cold weather build the model is functioning as footwear rather than equipment. Loyal Blue gives it a deep, saturated tone that sits far from the red, black and white that work as the brand's own colours. This is the line doing what it has done since 1997, when Jordan Brand became a standalone Nike division: taking its archive silhouettes and building them for lives that have nothing to do with a court.
This is a cold weather shoe, so use it as one. First: dark straight leg denim with a heavy knit and a wool overcoat, the blue sitting under everything and giving a dark winter outfit some depth. Second: black cargo trousers with a thick hoodie and a puffer, a practical combination for genuinely cold days. Wear a thicker sock and size accordingly. Salt is the enemy of any winter shoe: brush it off the same day, use a damp cloth on the affected panel, and dry away from heat with paper inside to hold shape. Condition heavier materials every few months and do not store them damp.
The brand's move off the court is documented across sport, not just weather. Jordan Brand became sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016 and sponsored Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, its first association football club, while its collaboration programme reached Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme, KAWS and Travis Scott, whose Cactus Jack work covered the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6. By 2022 the division generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike. A winter build of a retro 4 is what a business that size does when it wants the archive worn twelve months a year.
A winterized makeup is a materials brief. Expect heavier surfaces than a standard retro and a build aimed at cold and wet rather than at hardwood, which is what the name on the box is promising. Nike has not published the exact material composition, any insulation rating or a waterproofing claim for this pair, so do not treat it as a boot until you have checked the actual spec with the retailer. This line has carried Nike Air cushioning since its second model. Practically: heavier winter materials need conditioning rather than washing, salt should come off the same day it lands, and drying should happen slowly at room temperature with paper inside.
