New Balance 530 Black

Released on 24 December 2020 and part of New Balance's 530 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Silver. In black, the 530 stops being a retro running shoe and becomes something closer to a uniform. The model comes from the plain middle of New Balance's running catalogue, never a flagship, never mythologised, which is why it slid so easily into everyday wear once the brand's ordinariness became a design position. Most 530s trade on light greys and silvers, the shoe as a soft object. Blacking it out inverts that. The panel lines stay, the block N stays, but the shoe reads as dark mass rather than as sports nostalgia, which makes it the version that works in a city where a pale midsole lasts about a week.
