Released on 2 February 2023 and part of New Balance's 550 line. This release has a leather upper in Sea Salt/Team Royal. Team Royal is a colour with a job description. Royal blue on an off white leather court shoe is varsity language, the palette of gym floors and school jerseys, and the 550 is the New Balance silhouette that speaks it natively. It came out of the brand's basketball archive, sat overlooked for years, and returned as the everyday low top precisely because it still looked like a shoe made for a team rather than for a shop window. Sea Salt as a base keeps it from reading as a costume: slightly warm, slightly worn in, the off white that makes a bold accent colour look considered instead of new.
Utility
Royal blue is a strong accent, so give it one thing to talk to and leave everything else neutral. First recipe: raw indigo denim with a white tee and a grey zip up, where the blue on the shoe rhymes with the denim without matching it. Second: cream wide leg trousers with a navy knit polo, letting the sea salt base tie the shoe to the trouser. The low collar looks best under a full length hem. Sizing runs true with a shallow toe box, so take the wider fitting rather than a longer shoe. Wipe leather after wear, clean the off white panels early rather than deep cleaning later, and keep new dark denim off the pale sections.
Influence
New Balance's sponsorship map is unusually broad for a company built on running: the NBA, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets, New York Road Runners, Team Ireland at Rio 2016, and football clubs from FC Porto in 2014 to Sao Paulo in 2024. Team colours are a real part of its business rather than a styling reference. What made the 550 land culturally, though, was accident rather than strategy. The brand's plainness had already been reclaimed by normcore and then by high fashion, so a forgotten basketball shoe arrived as an authentic object at the exact moment authenticity was the thing people wanted to buy.
Construction
Leather across a low cut court upper, with the block N and the heel panelling picked out in royal against a sea salt base, so the colour marks the structure rather than covering it. That two tone approach is the oldest trick in basketball footwear and it works because the panels were laid out to be read. Underneath is a flat, firm platform on a broad rubber outsole for lateral grip, with a padded collar to hold the ankle, which is why the 550 feels planted rather than cushioned and why it breaks in rather than feeling soft on day one. Multiple width fittings matter on leather, which will not stretch its way out of a poor fit.
