Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 9 March 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Team Gold/Coconut Milk. Black suede with gold and coconut is the Dunk dressed up rather than dressed down, and it works because the model is so plain that luxury material reads as a genuine change rather than as decoration. The Dunk started as a basketball shoe tied to college colour programmes, was discontinued, and was brought back by skateboarding into the most collected silhouette Nike makes. Along the way it became a material canvas as much as a colour one. Style code DV3054 001. Coconut is a warm off white, gold is the metallic accent, and black suede is the base that lets both of them sit without the shoe tipping into costume territory.
Black suede with gold wants evening clothing. First: black wide leg trousers with a slight break, a black knit and a single gold detail elsewhere, a watch or a chain, so the accent has a partner. Second: dark indigo denim with a cream overshirt, where coconut panels tie to the shirt and the black grounds it. It is a dry weather and indoor shoe: rain ruins suede permanently. Dunks fit narrow, so size up half for a wide forefoot. Protect with a suede spray before first wear, brush with a crepe brush in one direction only, use a suede eraser on marks, and never apply water or leather cleaner to the nap.
Premium material treatments are how Nike keeps a forty year old silhouette selling to people who already own three of them. From the 1980s onward the brand became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, with the Dunk eventually joining the Air Force 1 and Air Max as everyday dress, and in that world material quality has always been read as a signal. The Dunk's second life came through skateboarding, where Nike SB rebuilt it and also learned the cost of borrowing culture, apologising in 2005 after using Minor Threat album art. Black suede sits at the opposite end of that history: quiet, expensive looking, and hard to fault.
Suede changes the whole character of a Dunk. Where leather creases sharply and reflects light, suede absorbs it, giving a matte depth that makes the panelling read as texture rather than as outline. That comes at a maintenance cost, since suede takes water badly, marks from contact and cannot be wiped clean. Gold accents sit on branding and detailing, and metallic finishes dull from abrasion rather than from dirt. Underneath, the Dunk platform is unchanged: a rubber cupsole, a low basketball collar and a flat grippy outsole. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, is the company's cushioning foundation, though the Dunk was always bought for its shape.
