Culture Note™
Released on 19 May 2021 and part of the Forum line. This release has a patent leather upper in Red/Core Black/Cloud White. This is a Forum Low built around The Simpsons and the show's Duff Beer running gag, which means the shoe is doing something unusual for a basketball silhouette: it is not referencing a player, a season or a city, it is referencing a fictional lager from a cartoon that has been on air long enough to be its own visual language. Duff's palette is fixed in most people's memory as red and white with a heavy serif logotype, and a low top court shoe is one of the few objects broad enough to carry that without looking like merchandise. What you get is a joke that works at a glance and keeps working, because the reference is older and more widely shared than most sneaker collaborations manage.
Recipe one: loose mid wash denim, a plain white tee, a red cap or red socks picking up the Duff palette so the reference reads as intentional colour rather than costume. Recipe two: black cargo trousers, an oversized black tee, strap left undone, which flattens the novelty and lets the shape carry it. This is daytime, casual and social wear only, and it is the wrong shoe for anywhere with a dress code or for any actual sport. Court shoes of this type fit true to slightly long, so try before committing. Clean panels with a damp cloth rather than soaking, keep printed graphics away from abrasive brushes, and use a shoe tree to slow the toe crease.
Cartoon and television collaborations occupy a specific corner of sneaker culture: they trade on shared memory instead of sporting credibility, which is why they tend to sell to people who did not follow the sport the shoe came from. Duff Beer is one of the most recognisable fake brands in television history, and putting it on a court shoe puts it in the same category as team logos and college colours, which is exactly the deadpan gag.
A low cut court silhouette with a flat rubber outsole, the classic hardwood build that sits close to the ground and gives you very little compression underfoot. The Forum's identifiable feature is its ankle strap, which is functional rather than decorative and changes how the shoe locks down: cinched, it holds the midfoot firmly, left loose it drapes and softens the whole look. The Duff theming is carried through applied graphics and colour blocking rather than a change to the shape. Panelled uppers of this kind crease at the toe flex point and hold it, and any pale panel will be the surface that dates first, so treat those as the areas that need attention.
