Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 11 April 2020 as part of the Yeezy 700 V3 line. This release has a mesh upper in Alvah/Alvah/Alvah. Alvah is the 700 V3 at its most severe. The model released on 23 December 2019 and abandoned the nineties runner references that had defined the earlier 700s, including the Wave Runner from 12 August 2017, in favour of something closer to industrial design: a smooth inner shell held inside a moulded outer cage. In an all black treatment the two layers stop reading as separate parts and the whole shoe becomes a single dark mass whose structure only appears when light catches an edge. The naming, invented and biblical sounding, belongs to the later period of the line rather than its terrain named beginnings. adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022, so this is archive product.
Utility
All black volume works best with equally simple, wide clothing. Recipe one: black technical trousers with a black shell jacket, everything matte, so the shoe reads as part of a single dark outline. Recipe two: dark grey wide leg denim with a black hoodie and a long coat, where the sole mass balances the length of the coat. Avoid tapered or cropped slim trousers, which make the shoe look bolted on. Take your usual size and expect an enclosed fit. Clean the cage with a soft brush that reaches into the gaps, use foam cleaner sparingly, avoid soaking the shoe, and dry at room temperature away from radiators and direct sun.
Influence
The 700 V3 shows what happens when a line is commercially strong enough to release something genuinely alien. By late 2019 Yeezy had already made drop culture mainstream, with limited releases producing queue culture, bot buying and a resale market that dwarfed retail, and the business was generating around two billion dollars a year for adidas. That scale is what buys the freedom to sell a caged, logo free, unfamiliar silhouette. Kanye West founded and designed the line, and adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022 after his antisemitic public remarks, which the company called unacceptable, hateful and dangerous. The V3 remains one of the period's most argued about designs.
Construction
The V3 wraps a smooth shell in a moulded cage, so the upper is defined by structure rather than by knit or panelling, and the lacing sits low and minimal so it never interrupts that silhouette. No logo appears anywhere on the exterior, which on an all black shoe means there is genuinely nothing to look at but form. The sole unit is heavy and slab like, and the shoe wears warmer and more enclosed than any knit model in the range. Black hides the scuffing that the cage edges collect, which makes this the most practical version of a very impractical shape. Expect a snug forefoot and a firm, planted feel underfoot rather than a bouncy one.
