Origin
Released on 13 August 2021 and part of New Balance's 2002R line. This release has a suede upper in Rain Cloud/Magnet. Grey is New Balance's native colour, the shade that turned an unglamorous running shoe into a design position, and Rain Cloud is the exact temperature of that idea: cool, overcast, deliberately unexciting. The Protection Pack treatment then takes the 2002R apart. Rather than presenting a finished runner, it shows you the shoe mid disassembly, with structure left visible and edges left raw, so a premium silhouette arrives looking salvaged. That contradiction is the appeal. New Balance is the brand that priced above its competitors on the strength of factory badges and fit engineering, so a version that looks like it was pulled from a skip is a joke the brand has earned the right to tell.
Utility
Grey on grey is the obvious move and it works. Recipe one: charcoal wide leg trousers, a heather grey crew, a black jacket, a tonal stack where the raw edges of the shoe supply the only texture. Recipe two: break it with colour, olive fatigues and a rust or burgundy knit, which warms up the cold upper without fighting it. Grey suede is the least forgiving material in monsoon, so spray a protector before wearing, dry them away from direct heat, and brush the nap back up once dry. The last runs long for many people, so try a half size down, and use the width fittings if you need volume rather than length.
Influence
The grey New Balance runner is the most quietly documented shoe in American life. The 990 family became the archetypal dad shoe, and its wearers include Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner alongside Steve Jobs, all documented wearers rather than paid faces, which is precisely what gave the colour its credibility. Nobody was selling it. Normcore then reclaimed that plainness in the 2010s and high fashion followed, turning grey suede into a deliberate choice. A deconstructed grey 2002R is the late chapter of that story: the colour is no longer neutral, it is a reference, and taking the shoe apart is the only way left to make it feel new.
Construction
Suede and mesh make up the upper in overcast greys, with the Protection Pack finish leaving overlays cut back and internal structure exposed where a standard make would cover it. The effect is architectural rather than damaged: you can see how the shoe is assembled. ABZORB handles impact, the proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend engineered to disperse heel strike before it reaches the knees and hips, which is a softer and lighter approach than ENCAP, the moulded polyurethane rim around an EVA core that gives the 990 and 574 their stability. Because grey suede shows water spotting more than most finishes, the exposed edges here need protecting early rather than after the first rain.
