Origin
Released on 2 September 2022 and part of the Adilette 22 line. This release has a synthetic upper in Aluminium/Aluminium/Aluminium. The Adilette is the least complicated thing adidas makes and one of the most worn: a single band across the foot, a moulded footbed, three stripes and nothing else. The 22 is the contemporary reworking, with a sculpted, textured footbed and a heavier, more architectural sole than the poolside original. Aluminium is the colour that suits that treatment best, a flat grey that makes the shoe look moulded from one material. It fits a brand that has always let its identifying mark carry the design work: adidas bought the Three Stripes from Karhu Sports in 1952 and has spent every decade since finding new surfaces to put them on.
Utility
Two recipes. Black or grey sweat shorts with a plain tee, the recovery uniform this shoe was designed around. Or wide black trousers with a heavy sock and an oversized shirt, the deliberately unbothered version that works for a coffee run and a short flight. It is the right call for post-gym, beach, home and rain, and the wrong call for anything requiring distance walking or grip on wet tile. Size true, and size down if you want a snug band rather than a loose one. Rinse with fresh water after sand or chlorine, air dry out of direct sun, and skip any solvent cleaner on the moulded surface.
Influence
Slides moved from locker rooms into general dress without any campaign pushing them, part of the same drift that has repeatedly taken adidas product out of sport and into daily life without the company's involvement. The Adilette is the recovery shoe worn by footballers, the airport shoe, the shoe you keep by the door. In a flat aluminium grey it reads as a design object rather than a pool sandal, which is the point of the 22's heavier, sculpted treatment. There is also a genuine design argument here, because a single-material moulded slide is one of the few pieces of footwear where form and function are the same decision, and adidas has been refining that decision for decades.
Construction
A one-piece moulded slide with a wide instep band and a contoured footbed shaped to the arch and toes, in a single aluminium grey tone throughout. Because the whole shoe is one material, there are no seams to fail and nothing to absorb water, which is why slides like this survive pool decks, changing rooms and monsoon puddles equally. The textured footbed grips a bare foot better than a smooth one, particularly when wet. The band runs wide, so the fit is about volume across the instep rather than length. Rinse and air dry and it is effectively new again.
