Part of the Air Jordan 1 Zoom line. This release has a suede upper in University Blue/White/Olive/Volt. University blue with volt is a pairing that belongs entirely to the modern brand: a pale collegiate blue, the colour of Michael Jordan's own university programme, set against a high visibility yellow green that has no historical connection to the line at all. The Zoom Comfort platform is where that combination makes sense, because this is not a reissue and does not pretend to be. It takes the High silhouette Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore and rebuilds the interior and the underfoot for people who walk all day. The second version refines that platform. What you are buying is the most recognisable shape in sneakers, engineered for the way it is actually used.
Volt is the loudest thing here, so give it room. Grey sweatpants with a white tee and a grey hoodie lets both colours sit against a neutral field, which is the most wearable version. For something sharper, black trousers with a black crewneck turns the blue and volt into a single graphic accent at the floor. Do not add any other bright. Cuff the hem to show the collar, since the Comfort build looks heavier under a long trouser. Sizing runs long on many feet. Clean the volt panels early and often, dry the pair away from heat after wet days, and rotate wears so the cushioning recovers.
Carolina blue carries real weight in this brand because Jordan played at North Carolina, one of the programmes Jordan Brand outfits alongside Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan. Volt belongs to a different tradition entirely, the high visibility sportswear language of the modern era. Putting them together is the kind of move a brand can only make once its silhouette is beyond argument, and this one is: its position was established by Spike Lee's Nike advertising, in which he directed and played Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z naming the shoes on record.
The upper keeps the Air Jordan 1 High panel map with the collar rising over the ankle, but the padding and the sole unit are the point of difference. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the second model, and the Zoom Comfort build brings that technology into a version of the 1 tuned for standing and walking rather than for lateral cuts on hardwood. Expect a softer collar and a fuller profile than a Retro High OG, which is the visible price of the comfort. Pale blue shows scuffing quickly, and the volt accents will be the first thing to look dirty, so clean the bright areas first.
