Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 July 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Metallic Gold. Method of Make is Jordan Brand naming a line after its own process, and putting it on the 1 Low in black is a confident choice: no colour story, no archive quotation, just the model and its finishing. The 1 can take that treatment because it has been the brand's constant since 1984, when Nike signed a Chicago Bulls rookie to a six year deal worth 2.5 million dollars with royalties attached, roughly three times any other contract in the league. Everything since has been variations on the shape. A black, make focused Low is the version that asks you to look at how the shoe is put together rather than what it commemorates.
All black Lows are the most usable shoe in the line. Wear them with black tailored trousers and a grey knit for something that passes in most rooms, or with dark selvedge denim and a black leather jacket when you want the fit harder. They also work under a suit trouser if the code allows sneakers, which is not true of a high top. Cuff or crop the hem so the low collar shows. Brush dust off weekly, condition the leather occasionally so the vamp crease does not turn grey, and avoid harsh cleaners that leave dull patches on black.
A make focused line is Jordan Brand answering the fashion houses on its own terms. Its collaboration programme has run through Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, all of which treated the 1 as a construction exercise, and through music with Travis Scott, Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj. The credibility underneath is older and simpler: Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, the Banned campaign built on the NBA's 51 percent white shoe rule and the fine Nike chose to pay, and a shoe that sold out its first 50,000 pairs.
Black on black hides colour and exposes craft, so the panel edges, the stitch lines and the way materials change texture between the toe cap, eyestay, quarter and Swoosh are what you are actually assessing. The Low has no collar padding and sits below the ankle. Underneath is a flat rubber cupsole with no cushioning window, since Nike Air entered the line at the Air Jordan 2. Perforations run across the toe box. Black uppers are practical but dusty rather than dirty, so a dry brush before any wet cleaning keeps the finish even, and a light conditioner stops leather from greying at the crease.
