Designed by Peter Moore and released on 15 September 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in New Emerald/White/Light Steel Grey/Taxi. The Air Jordan 1 is where everything starts. Designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, not by Tinker Hatfield, it sold out its initial 50,000 pairs and pushed past 150 million dollars in sales against a Nike target of about three million over three years. Cut to a low and put on a grade school last, the 1 becomes something else again: less a court relic, more a daily shoe for people who never saw it played in. New Emerald takes the silhouette somewhere the original palette never went. Chicago red, black and white function as house colours for this brand, so a deep green 1 is deliberately off script, which is exactly why the SE and grade school programme is where Jordan Brand keeps testing colour.
Two recipes. First, black tapered trousers and a white tee, where the emerald reads as the only saturated thing in the fit and does all the work. Second, light wash jeans with a cream knit, which softens the green and makes it look intentional rather than loud. Grade school sizing runs about one and a half sizes below adult men's, so convert carefully before buying rather than assuming. Lows suit warm weather and no sock or low cut sock, and they fit a wider foot better than the high does. Wipe the emerald panels with a soft brush and mild soap, never a solvent, and let the shoe dry at room temperature away from sunlight.
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that made sneaker collecting a mass activity rather than a hobby, and original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX. That gravity is why the 1 gets more colourways than any other model in the line and why it survives being pulled far from its basketball origins. Jordan Brand's collaboration programme has run the same silhouette through Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme, KAWS and Travis Scott. A general release green low sits at the opposite end of that spectrum, which is the point: it is the version you can actually wear without doing arithmetic about resale.
This is a low cut Air Jordan 1 on the grade school last, so the proportions are tighter and lighter than the adult version rather than simply shrunk. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the second model and remains what separates this from a flat vulcanised sneaker. Emerald is a saturated mid tone, which means it will read almost black in low light and unmistakably green in daylight, and any white panelling next to it will show dirt long before the green does. Low cut Jordans flex hard at the toe, so creasing across the vamp is normal and not a defect. Keep the laces slightly loose through the lower eyelets to reduce the fold and clean the midsole separately from the upper.
