Culture Note™
Black Toe is one of the three or four colour arrangements that people describe by name rather than by code, black across the toe box with white and red filling the rest of the panels. It comes from the original Chicago palette, which came in turn from the Bulls uniform of the rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 for six years and about 2.5 million dollars with a royalty on sales. Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore designed the shoe, it was produced for Michael Jordan on 17 November 1984 and released publicly on 1 April 1985. On the Mid, the arrangement is easier to buy and easier to wear than any of its higher priced relatives.
Three colours on the foot means one colour above it. Black denim with a white tee is the standard pairing and it lets all three shoe blocks read separately. The alternative is grey, a grey sweatsuit or grey trousers with a black knit, which mutes the palette and makes the red look considered rather than sporty. Adding a red garment collapses the whole effect, so avoid it. Fit runs long and narrow, so a half size down suits most feet. Keep the white block protected and clean it the day it marks, wipe the red dry rather than wet since it is the dye most likely to migrate, and store with a shaped toe insert.
Black, white and red function as brand colours in themselves, alongside the number 23. That palette carries the memory of the Banned campaign, built on the NBA uniform rule requiring shoes at least 51 percent white and its 5,000 dollar per game fine, which Nike paid rather than redesigning, though the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Michael Jordan wore before the Air Jordan 1 released. Spike Lee directed the earliest advertising as Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put the shoes into music. Any Black Toe execution is trading on that recognition, which is why it needs no explanation on the street.
The 1 predates the Nike Air cushioning that entered the line with the Air Jordan II, so this rides a rubber cupsole over firm foam, low and stiff until the leather relaxes across the flex point. The Mid collar sits at the ankle rather than above it. The three colour block layout puts a large white area between black and red, and that white is the whole maintenance story: it greys with dust long before either of the other colours shows wear, and once it does the shoe reads tired regardless of condition. With no style code listed here, treat the specific panel materials as unconfirmed until you have the pair in hand.
