Designed by Peter Moore and released on 27 December 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Off Noir/White/Gym Red. Gym Red with Off Noir is the Chicago palette shifted a few degrees. Instead of true black you get an off black with a softer edge, and instead of a pure white base you get something warmer, which takes the heat out of a colourway that can otherwise look like a costume. The reference is still the original: Nike signed Jordan on 26 October 1984, the shoe reached the public on 1 April 1985, and the red, black and white split became the brand's own colour language. Making it slightly imperfect is the modern move, and on a women's Mid it turns a heritage code into something you can wear on a Tuesday.
Two recipes. First, black wide leg trousers with a cream knit, letting the red sit as the single point of colour and the off noir tie back to the trouser. Second, a black leather jacket over a white tee and light wash jeans, where the shoe finishes a look that would otherwise be flat. Mids sit best with a hem that stops at or above the collar, so cuff full length jeans once. Red draws the eye down, so keep the top half plain. Protect the pale panels before first wear, brush dust off after use, and let the pair dry naturally away from heat if it gets wet.
Red and black together is the combination the brand built its early advertising on. The Banned campaign came from the NBA's uniform policy requiring shoes to be at least 51 percent white, and the shoe the league actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the 1 released; Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and turned the rule into marketing. Spike Lee directed those campaigns and played Mars Blackmon in them. Hip hop did the rest, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting the shoes into lyrics. Wearing gym red is wearing that argument.
The Mid collar closes around the ankle without the High's full wrap, which is what makes a three colour block work at this height: red, off noir and the base each get a clear zone and none of them dominate. Panel seams break the red across the quarter so it does not read as a slab. Off noir is a warmer, softer black, so it recedes next to the gym red rather than cutting hard against it, and it hides scuffs the way true black does. Strong red fades in direct sunlight over time, so store the pair out of a sunny window. Wipe rain marks off the pale sections the same day rather than letting them dry into rings.
