Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/White/Hyper Royal. Hyper Royal takes the blue that has followed the Air Jordan 1 since the beginning and pushes it brighter and more electric than the original royal ever was. On the Mid, that reads as pure colour rather than heritage. The parent shoe came from Peter Moore working with Bruce Kilgore for the rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, a six year deal worth about 2.5 million dollars with a royalty attached, struck because Nike was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face of its own. Blue was part of the earliest run of colourways, so a hyper version of it is not an invention. It is the same idea with the saturation dial turned up.
Loud blue is easiest against grey. A grey sweatsuit or grey wide leg trousers with a white tee lets the royal sit as the single point of colour without turning the outfit into a costume. The second route is denim on denim in a light wash, where the shoe becomes the deepest blue in a graded stack. Do not add red or green anywhere in the fit, because a saturated royal fights both. Fit runs long and narrow, so a half size down suits most feet. Clean the blue panels gently since strong pigment dulls under harsh solutions, keep the pair out of prolonged sun where royal shifts toward purple, and treat the white leather separately.
Air Jordan reached culture through the collision of basketball and hip hop. Spike Lee directed the earliest advertising and played Mars Blackmon opposite Michael Jordan, putting the shoe into film language rather than sports marketing, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers in their music. The Banned campaign, built on the NBA rule requiring shoes at least 51 percent white and Nike's decision to pay the 5,000 dollar per game fine, taught the market that a shoe could sell on conflict. Bright royal blue belongs to the early period of that story, when the line still worked in flat, saturated colour blocks rather than in materials and textures.
Nike Air cushioning entered the line with the Air Jordan II, so this Mid sits on a rubber cupsole and firm foam with no air unit underneath. The Mid collar closes around the ankle without the height of the High OG, which makes it the easiest cut in the family to slip on. A strong royal blue is pigment heavy, which has two consequences: it looks richest when new and it fades faster in sunlight than a muted navy would. The white panels that separate the blue will grey with normal use and are the first thing to clean. Expect the leather to soften across the flex point within a few wears, at which point the shoe finally stops fighting you.
